McGuinty promises smaller cabinet; Hudak says it’d better be

Dalton McGuinty held his first cabinet meeting since the election today.

But first he spoke to reporters, saying he’s more than willing to work with the minority government that Ontarians voted for.

“I’m setting a goal for ourselves. I want us to deliver the best modern-day minority government ever. I want Ontarians to be proud of their government and the progress that we make. It’s going to require that we find a way to work with the opposition.”

“There’s no getting around that and I look forward to doing that.”

McGuinty’s new cabinet will be sworn in on Thursday. He says it will be smaller and will primarily focus on the economy.

As for the actual size of the new cabinet, opposition leader Tim Hudak says McGuinty should reduce his cabinet by at least 20 percent, and penalize ministers who don’t meet spending targets.

“If cabinet fails to meet important goals on reigning in government spending, he should dock their pay and his pay as Premier as well. Let’s hold politicians accountable for reigning in runaway government spending.”

Hudak says he’s confident none of his members will cross the floor to give the Liberals a majority government.
