Kormos stepping aside

Ontario MPP Peter Kormos is leaving the provincial legislature after representing Welland at Queen’s Park for 23 years.

The veteran New Democrat announced Friday he won’t be seeking re-election this fall.

Kormos says he’ll still be working right up until election day, and he’ll be on the campaign trial supporting NDP leader Andrea Horwath.

But he says it’s time for a change.

The typically outspoken Kormos paid tribute to outgoing speaker Steve Peters earlier by saying Peters was the first speaker in 23 years not to throw him out of the legislature for misbehaving.

Back in the nineties, Kormos was kicked out of cabinet by former NDP Premier Bob Rae because he’d posed as a “sunshine boy” in the Toronto Sun.
