Polo Niagara returns to Niagara-on-the-Lake

A sport steeped in history returned to Niagara’s Fort George on Saturday.

For the first time in 12 years, Polo Niagara hosted a match on the field where military men used to spend their downtime.

Polo is typically a British game and it made its way to Canada early in the 20th century.

It never really hit the mainstream so it’s a rare treat to attend a match.

Most call it “the sjport of kings” but the boisterous game of polo has earned itself another nickname.

Polo’s been referred to as hockey on horseback.

The sport was a popular pastime during both world wars, as officers would unwind with a match during training.

Polo was played at the Niagara field by the officers 100 years ago.

Over 300 people turned out to watch Saturday’s charity match.
