Mohawk College has spent a lot of time and money to make their campuses environmentally friendly.

Their new transit terminal is used by over 4 000 Mohawk students and staff daily. However, the college’s push towards public transit is just one of the many ways it says it’s reducing its carbon footprint.

A couple of years ago Mohawk College issued a policy to ban the sale of plastic bags and plastic water bottles and instead they put in systems where you can bring in your own water bottle and fill it up yourself.

Alan Griffiths is the manager of Mohawk’s Sustainability Office. He works with students to lower their environmental impact and also monitors the buildings which account for 35% of greenhouse gas emissions.

To reduce the number of cars in the parking lots the college created a bike loan program, priority carpool spots and 24/7 access to the HSR. While enrolment has gone up, the need for parking spaces has gone down.

Since 2011 Mohawk College claims to have cut its carbon footprint by 24% and as an institution of higher learning, it’s hoping this kind of effort also educates its students about sustainability.
