U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial Department of Government Efficiency, known as “DOGE,” has quietly disbanded eight months before its mandate was set to expire.

The unit launched with big promises to slash federal spending with the world’s richest man Elon Musk at the helm, but officials say it no longer exists as a centralized agency.

The agency set up in January, made dramatic moves in Washington to rapidly shrink federal agencies, cut their budgets, or otherwise redirect their work to better align with President Trump’s priorities.

While DOGE members touted its success, it drew criticism for lacking legal authority to make certain changes and failed to provide public accounting of its work.

According to Reuters, the U.S. federal government’s human resources office has taken over many of DOGE’s functions and at least two prominent DOGE employees are now involved with the National Design Studio.
