Prime Minister Mark Carney evoked the legacy of Nelson Mandela while in South Africa for the G20 Summit, praising fellow world leaders for collaborating during global volatility.

Canada walked away from the event having more trade deals in the works, and promoting multilateralism, despite the glaring absence of the United States.

Carney spoke highly of a joint declaration signed by most of the leaders at the summit, that touched on climate change and gender equality.

He also made a point of recognizing the decision of the Trump administration not to attend, describing it as “a reminder that the centre of gravity in the global economy is shifting.”

The next G20 summit is slated to be hosted by the United States at Trump’s golf course in Florida but the ceremonial handover of the Presidency could not take place this time around after Trump refused to attend.
