Niagara police charge school bus driver with impaired driving after crash

A school bus driver has been charged with impaired driving following a hit-and-run collision Monday afternoon in Niagara Falls.

Niagara police say the man driving the school bus had been involved in a minor crash with a garbage truck around 3 p.m. but fled the scene in the area of Montrose Road and Lundy’s Lane.

Investigators say the garbage truck driver followed the school bus until it stopped near Pitton Road.

Officers were called to the scene, where they arrested and charged 30-year-old Devon D. Dobbs with impaired operation.

Investigators say Dobbs was working for Sharp Bus Lines Ltd. and the District School Board of Niagara.

Police say there were no students on the school bus at the time of the collision.

Dobbs was released from custody and scheduled to appear in a St. Catharines court on April 20.

This is the second school bus driver in the Niagara region facing charges this year.

On Jan. 24, another driver operating a bus that was carrying four children was involved in a collision with a pickup truck in Welland.

Niagara police say the truck was so damaged the driver had to be pulled out by firefighters.

The truck driver was taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say the school bus did not stay at the scene.

Police say the 77-year-old school bus driver was charged with careless driving and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
