McMaster University has developed a 15 minute rapid test able to determine if someone has the antibodies for the strain of coronavirus that cause COVID-19.
The Dean of Engineering, Ishwar Puri, teamed up with researches at McMaster to create the at-home test able to detect SARS-COV-2 with a finger prick.
Although the prototype test is $26 to make, the cost would come down if they were made at a large scale.
Since the test detects antibodies after infection, a person would be able to use it to indicate if they ever had the virus up to three months after symptoms subside.
Puri notes that the test doesn’t give false positives, but can give false negatives.
“It has a certain threshold of detection and if the antibodies have either fallen off or if they are not at a particular threshold even if a person is infected then the tests will not pick up,” said Puri.
