Driving less and walking more isn’t just good for your health, it’s good for the environment.

Hamilton’s walkability is improving, but it still has a long way to go. Residents who want to spend more time on foot will have to make it a priority.

Some Hamilton neighbourhoods, shops, banks and restaurants are easily accessible on foot and traffic calming features make walking safe and enjoyable.

Sometimes driving is unavoidable, but according to Lynda Lukasic from Environment Hamilton, half the car trips Hamiltonians take are shorter than 5km and those little drives add up.

Sharon Mackinnon from Hamilton Public Health recommends driving partway and parking within walking distance of your target.

Spending less time in the car and more time on foot is good for both physical and mental health.

Studies have shown that highly walkable neighbourhoods with safe sidewalks and lots of amenities have lower rates of obesity and diabetes.
