What’s open and closed during Civic holiday in Hamilton and surrounding regions

Here is a list of businesses and services that will be open or closed on the Civic holiday Monday in the Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions.
The first Monday in August, the Civic holiday, is not a statutory holiday in Ontario, but it is commonly observed by all levels of government.
Many government offices, stores and municipal services throughout Hamilton, Halton and the Niagara Region will be closed for the Civic holiday.
Most city-related administrative offices will be closed, including by-law offices, public libraries and animal services.
Banks, post offices and schools will all be closed.
GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Cineplex, Landmark and other movie theatres like The Westdale will be open for the Civic holiday.
HAMILTON
There will be no garbage curbside pick-up in Hamilton and in other cities. Green bin, blue box, yard waste, garbage and scheduled bulk garbage pick-up will happen one day later for the rest of the week.
Community recycling centres will be closed Monday.
Most grocery stores will be closed with some stores and Shoppers Drug Mart locations open on a case-by-case basis.
Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) will operate on a Sunday schedule, with last trips leaving downtown Hamilton at around midnight.
MyRide in Waterdown and Trans-Cab service will align with HSR Sunday schedules.
DARTS will operate following holiday service hours. All subscription trips – except for dialysis – are cancelled, and passengers that need to travel must make a reservation in advance.
The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum at John C. Munro airport in Hamilton will be open on Monday until 5 p.m.
HALTON
Burlington Transit will also operate on a Sunday schedule, and customer service and specialized dispatch will be closed.
Waste collection will not happen Monday, and instead will be collected one day later.
Nelson Pool and Splash Park, Mountainside Pool and Splash Park, and LaSalle Wading Pool and Splash Park will be open Monday.
NIAGARA REGION
Many shopping centres in Niagara Falls will be open Monday including:
- Canada One in Niagara Falls
- SmartCentres in Niagara Falls
- Outlet Collection at Niagara in Niagara-on-the-Lake
- The Pen Centre in St Catharines
- Fairview Mall in St Catharines
- Briarfield Shopping Centre in St Catharines
- Seaway Mall in Welland
Several breweries and wineries are open in the region, as well as many family-friendly tourist attractions, like the Niagara SkyWheel, Bird Kingdom and the Niagara Speedway.
Niagara Region Transit will offer conventional bus service in St. Catharines, Welland, and Niagara Falls.
There will also be no change to waste collection in the region, though Niagara Road 12 Landfill and Drop-off Depot in West Lincoln will be closed.
