VIA Rail has reached a tentative deal with the union representing 2,400 workers across the country, which now awaits a ratification vote.

VIA Rail Canada was able to work out a deal with Unifor’s Council 4000 and Local 100 to avert a walkout involving members of Unifor.

Those members had voted for a strike mandate to be exercised as early as Sunday.

“Our employees are essential contributors to our success, and these agreements will help us move forward together as we continue to serve Canadians from coast to coast with dedication and pride,” said Mario Péloquin, the president and CEO of VIA Rail in a statement.

Both VIA Rail and Unifor have not released details of the deal, with Unifor preferring to inform its members at meetings scheduled over the upcoming weeks.

Unifor says the tentative agreement offers gains in wages, job security and working conditions.

Once ratified, the collective agreements will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2025, and will remain in effect to Dec. 31, 2027.
