Over the years, the Nobel Peace Prize has typically been awarded to those who have made the world a more peaceful place. In 2025, it was awarded to Venezuela’s opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, for her tireless work promoting democracy. But in a surprise move, she’s given the award away to no other than U.S. President Donald Trump.
Machado’s decision to bestow this award to the president is turning heads and proving to be very divisive. On one hand, some see it as a strategic move on her part to curry favor with Trump; others see it as a political gaffe, trying to appease the man who effectively sidelined her, following the arrest of former president Nicolas Maduro.
