Two teens charged after acts of disorder in Oakville on Canada Day

A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old have been charged for separate acts of disorder during celebrations in Oakville Tuesday evening.

Halton police made a concerted proactive effort to make the Canada Day festivities being held at Bronte Heritage Park in Oakville would be safe for visitors and residents.

This effort included increased police patrols, video surveillance and the early closing of some roadways and businesses.

During the celebration, large groups of youths had gathered some distance away from the park.

Police say several fireworks were then dangerously and unlawfully launched by some of the youth in the crowd.

Officers had tried to break up the gathering but were met with some resistance by the youth.

No property damage was reported and no one was reported injured.

A 16-year-old was arrested and charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act associated with a dangerous weapon: bear spray.

A 15-year-old was arrested for causing a disturbance and has been charged under municipal bylaw of discharging fireworks.

Police say that they are reviewing video to identify others responsible for acts of public disorder.
