Two Hamilton beaches closed after confirmation of toxic blue-green algae

Hamilton public health has closed the beaches at Pier 4 Park and Christie Lake Conservation Area due to the confirmed presence of toxic blue-green algae.
The closure will be in effect until the algae bloom subsides. Public health will continue to monitor, gather water samples and provide updates online.
City officials say that the presence of blue-green algae at Pier 4 is a strong indicator that other algae blooms could be present within the broader watershed.
Residents are advised to avoid all contact with the water. Pets must also be kept out of the water.
Blue-green algae can produce toxic particles called cyanotoxins. Contact with cyanotoxins can cause the following:
- Skin, eye, nose and throat irritation;
- Stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting;
- Headaches, muscle weakness and fever;
- Liver or kidney damage;
- Paralysis of skeletal and respiratory muscles.
The type and severity of illness depends on the length of exposure, the type and amount of toxins present, and how the person was exposed. Adverse health effects are mainly caused by drinking or accidentally ingesting the contaminated water.
