Tanks close bridge

The Niagara Regional Police explosives unit was called to the Allanburg bridge in Thorold this morning.

Propane and oxygen tanks were somehow wedged in between the bridge. The oxygen tank was caught when the bridge went up and the counterweight came down on top of it.

Police were concerned about the tanks potentially exploding. Highways 20 and 58 near the bridge were closed to traffic for three and a half hours.

Thorold firefighters safely removed the tanks around 11:30 this morning.
