Ontario Provincial Police have closed a number of roads going out of Caledonia towards Hamilton due to a tanker truck spill.

The spill is right by the intersection of Argyle Street North and Greens Road/Highway 6, near the Caledonia bypass.

Const. Patti Cote said a tanker truck turning left at the intersection around 1 a.m. realized in the midst of his turn that his load was leaking and pulled over immediately.

Cote said the trucker was transporting a slippery liquid asphalt substance and road closures will be in place until it is all cleaned up.

Traffic is being rerouted down Greens Road where they can turn down Mines Road or get back on the bypass.

Highway 6 is closed in both directions from Unity sideroad to Orkney Street. Road 66 is closed in both directions from Argyle Street to McClung Road.

A tanker truck spill near Caledonia caused early morning traffic delays.

A large scene was closed off to traffic, partly due to the nature of the spill. Cote said the leaked asphalt substance on the road eventually hardened considering the temperature outside and crews are now working to remove that material before traffic can proceed through.

The Ministry of the Environment as well as the Ministry of Transportation are on scene to facilitate clean up work, with road closures expected to stay in place for several more hours.

Cote said the investigation into what exactly happened to the truck to cause it to spill is still ongoing.
