(Update)

A two-year old girl is in McMaster Children’s Hospital tonight with serious head injuries after being run over by a car. It happened Monday morning in St. Catharines when the little girl was standing behind the car as her aunt was backing out of the driveway.

The seriously injured toddler was airlifted to McMaster to be examined by a specialist. The little girl whose name is Amelia Froese suffered two fractures on her skull. Amelia was hit by a car when she was visiting her grandparents at their Lanark Crescent home in St. Catharines this morning.

“My initial reaction was I just wanted to ball my eyes out, because I had no idea what was going on.”

Trudy Wall is one of Amelia’s aunts. There were a number of family members at the home this morning when this accident happened.

Amelia is small for her age. Family members tell us the little girl was standing at the back the car as her aunt was pulling out of the driveway. When Amelia was hit the children started yelling for the aunt to pull the car forward.

Reports were that the car ran over Amelia. But she was not run over by the tires. It’s a gravel driveway. After she was struck, she was crying and didn’t lose consciousness.

Trudy: “There’s no life threatening injuries, we know that much.”

Still, collision reconstruction officers were in the driveway today doing their investigation. Amelia’s family was here on vacation for a few weeks. They were staying with an aunt in Stevensville. The family had moved to Mexico last year.

Now police have wrapped up their investigation in the driveway on Lanark. This is the second time in a couple of days that a child has been struck by a car. In Niagara Falls on Saturday, a 7-year old chasing a toy airplane, ran into the road and was struck. Fortunately the driver slammed on the brakes. The young boy went to the hospital but wasn’t seriously injured.
