The weather may be warming up this weekend which also means any ice formations will be melting rapidly, making them extremely unsafe for people to walk on.
The first indicator of unsafe ice, is the pooling and pockets of water you see. You may also notice the colour — if it’s grey, that means there’s water right underneath and if you fall in, you don’t know how quick that current is flowing. Water safety groups said blue ice is the strongest ice.
General messaging from water safety groups and officials said to stay off the ice if it’s seven centimetres or less. They said ten centimetres of ice is needed for fishing or skating.
The Canadian Red Cross said temperatures that swing above 0 C, compromises the integrity of the ice.
If a person falls into the water, it can be deadly so rescue crews need to work fast.
Mike Pittaway, Training Officer, St. Catharines Fire Department said water flowing under currents can be deceiving therefore the safety of everyone involved is critical when performing a rescue.
If you do fall through the ice and you’re with a friend, be sure to not take your eyes off of them so rescuers know exactly where to go when they arrive.
