A 22-year-old Caledonia man is dead and another person is in hospital following a three-vehicle crash on Highway 8 in Hamilton early Tuesday morning.
Ontario Provincial Police say the collision happened around 5:30 a.m. on Highway 8 between Orkney Road and Highway 52.
In a video posted on X, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the man driving a pickup truck was travelling northbound on the single-lane highway and attempted to pass a tractor trailer in front.
The pickup truck driver then noticed oncoming traffic. As he tried to get around the tractor trailer, the two vehicles struck each other, resulting in the pickup truck losing control and hitting an oncoming vehicle in the southbound lane.

Schmidt says the pickup truck driver died at the scene, while the driver of the southbound vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Highway 8 between Orkney Road and Highway 52 was closed for nearly nine hours as police investigated, but it has since reopened.
Officers believe there were at least three other vehicles — including a flatbed hauling equipment and two other passenger vehicles — that were travelling southbound at the time of the collision.
