Residents ‘on the fence’ over Port Dover pier safety measure

A fence installed at the Port Dover pier last month is causing controversy among community residents.

The fence sits at the entrance of the pier with a door in the middle — there’s also an option to open the door even wider for maintenance purposes.

Area councillor Adam Veri says the fence was put there for safety reasons in order to close the pier during extreme weather conditions.

Now a petition with more than 1,300 signatures is calling for the fence’s removal.

Petition organizer Terrance Dunn questions why the fence went up all of a sudden and claims it’s been done “for control.”

Veri posted on Facebook saying The Port Dover Harbour Authority — which manages the pier — does not need permission from Norfolk County to do anything with the pier.

The door is open and only The Harbour Authority can close it.

The Harbour Authority and Norfolk Mayor Amy Martin were contacted for comment.
