Provincial Liberal party leader Bonnie Crombie announces resignation

Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie has announced she will resign, despite receiving enough votes to remain as party leader.

In a statement issued Sunday afternoon, Crombie said she believes “it is the best decision for the Ontario Liberal Party to facilitate an orderly transition towards a leadership vote.”

She added that her official resignation as head of the party will come after her successor is selected.

On Sunday, Crombie said she would remain as the leader after the party voted against holding a leadership race.

The vote was tight, but ultimately, 57 per cent of Liberal party members decided to not hold an election – meaning they support Crombie as leader.

This is a developing story — more to come.
