Prime Minister Mark Carney meets with U.S. President Donald Trump

Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Washington, D.C. today for his second oval office meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney’s office is calling the meeting a “working visit,” focusing on building a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S., while many Canadians are focused on tariff relief for industries.
Meanwhile, Trump boosted duties on Canada to 35 per cent in August — however, the duties don’t apply to goods compliant under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade, known as CUSMA.
Canada is also being slammed with tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles and copper.
Lumber tariffs are set to go into place Oct. 14 and yesterday Trump announced plans to impose a 25 per cent tariff on medium and heavy-duty truck imports on Nov. 1.
In a statement from the United Steelworkers union, National Director Marty Warren says Canada’s softwood lumber industry is on the “brink of collapse.”
Despite all of Canada’s concessions, there has been no indication that Trump will back down on his growing list of tariffs.
