Porter Airlines, Air Canada among airlines resuming flights to Mexico

A number of Canadian airlines are restarting service to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico this morning after suspending flights Sunday to the region because of widespread violence.

Flights with Porter Airlines, Air Canada, West Jet and Air Transat have restarted today while Flair Airlines flights still remain cancelled.

There are three flights to Puerto Vallarta leaving from Toronto Pearson International Airport this morning. CHCH News spoke with one couple headed to Cancun and they said they were worried about their trip being cancelled at the last minute as well.

The federal government says the number of registered Canadians in Mexico has jumped to more than 26,000 people.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand urged all Canadians in Mexico to register with Global Affairs and insisted all tech issues had been resolved.

The violence erupted in Jalisco State Sunday after the death of notorious drug lord “El Mencho”.

Mexican officials said yesterday at least 73 people died in the attempt to capture him, including security forces and suspected cartel members.

Even though flights have resumed today, federal travel warnings still remain in place.

Global Affairs is asking travellers to only go to the airport if you have a confirmed flight. Meanwhile, the first flight returning from Puerto Vallarta is set to land in Toronto at 6 p.m.
