Niagara police have arrested a man after a hit-and-run Saturday night in Welland killed a dog and sent a person to hospital.
Officers have confirmed that they arrested 44-year-old Sandev Varaich of Welland and charged him with failure to stop after causing harm, impaired operation causing harm and driving a vehicle while impaired beyond the legal limit.
Authorities say the collision happened on Thorold Road between Bridlewood Drive and Rose Avenue at around 8:30 p.m.
Police say they also seized the involved vehicle.
Investigators say the person hit suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries. At the time of the collision, they were walking their dog and the dog died as a result of the crash.
Niagara police say the road was reopened just before midnight Sunday morning.
