Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre could face a mandatory leadership review early next year.

The Globe and Mail was the first to report the story yesterday.

CBC later reported that the party’s national council has agreed the leadership review will likely take place in Calgary in January at the next national convention.

The Conservative Party’s constitution requires members to vote on whether a leader should stay on following an election loss.

Poilievre had been favoured to lead a majority Conservative government until Mark Carney was appointed as the new Liberal leader on March 10 and a federal election was called.

He lost in his riding of Carleton, Ont. in April’s election and is currently awaiting a byelection in the Alberta riding of Battle River-Crowfoot. Damien Kurek, MP for the riding, has said he will resign for Poilievre to run.

Poilievre had held the Carleton riding since 2004.
