The Transportation Minister says he has faith that people in Ontario will co-operate and help reduce traffic by 20% in the GTHA this July when the Pan Am games bring an estimated 250 000 visitors to this end of the province. He also says all venues will be ready in time including Tim Hortons Field and the new James st North Go Station.
“The James St North station in Hamilton will be ready, and in service in time for the Pan Am games. Everything will be operational by the time the games start.” Steven Del Duca Transportation Minister The key word may be “operational” the way Tim Hortons Field has been operational, but not finished.
For the Pan Am games there will be a whole network of HOV lanes on all the major GTA highways. Except, instead of a minimum of 2 people in your car, you’ll have to have a minimum of 3 people in your car. There will be more buses and trains running, and an expected 20% reduction in normal traffic levels. “We are encouraging everyone to plan ahead and consider options that will work for them, carpooling, public transit, or working flexible hours.”
Businesses and road construction companies are being asked to cooperate but opposition members say the plan is just wishful thinking. “Businesses still need to operate people still need to live, to expect that for every 5 people, one needs to stay at home, to alleviate traffic, it’s going to create problems.” Michael Harris PC MPP
OPP will be out in full force to deal with those problems. All 6 200 of them…vacation has been cancelled.
