Ontario Liberal party leader Steven Del Duca is promising that his party would slash transit fares to $1 per ride on every transit line in Ontario, if elected in June.

Del Duca made the announcement on Monday.

He says the plan would “reduce gridlock and greenhouse gas emission while making life more affordable for Ontario families.”

The Liberals promise “immediate relief” within the first 100 days of being elected. It also says monthly passes would be lowered to $40.

“Under our plan, someone hopping on the GO train from Oakville to head in for a Blue Jays game will save nearly $20 on their round trip. And a commuter taking the GO from Whitby to Toronto would save more than $300 dollars a month,” said Del Duca in a statement.

The plan would cost around $710 million in 2022-2023 and around $1.1 billion in 2023-2024.

Del Duca says his government would replace transit systems’ lost revenues, instead of municipal governments.
