14 years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Niagara-on-the-Lake continues to pause and remember the victims, as well as the sacrifices of the first responders. As Lauran Sabourin reports, town residents and tourists alike still have vivid memories of the horrors that unfolded that day.

8:45am, the moment the first plane hit the tower, the Canadian and American flags in front of the old town cenotaph were lowered. That was followed by two minutes of silence. People stopped in their tracks on the street, to remember the thousands who lost their lives that day.

For 14 years Niagara-on-the-Lake has held this ceremony on September 11th. The town has always had a strong connection with the U.S, forty percent of the tourists who visit the town are American.

Visitor Marc Timpano is a Long Island police officer who arrived in Niagara-on-the-Lake minutes before the ceremony began. He vividly remembers the horrific scenes at ground zero. “To walk through the streets and see vehicles and cars and people covered in ash.” Marc lost his friend Ronnie when the second tower came down. He saw Ronnie on video surveillance moments before he died.

“I’ll never forget the image of Ronnie. He knew he wouldn’t get out.”
