Norfolk County councillors, mayor to see pay raises for next council term

Voters in Norfolk County will soon find out if bigger paycheques are the key to better candidates, after a vote approved pay raises for the next council.
In a 5-4 vote, Norfolk councillors approved a significant salary hike, which will not come into effect until after the next municipal election in 2026.
After the next municipal election, the mayor’s pay will jump 27 per cent to over $118,000, while councillors will see a 44 per cent raise to just over $59,000.
Their pay is now tied to what Ontario MPPs earn, as they use their pay as a benchmark for their own increases.
Supporters say the hike makes public office more accessible and reflects the full-time demands of the job, but critics argue it’s out of step with what most people in Norfolk County make.
