The Hamilton Fire Department says that no one was injured in a massive house fire in the city’s East End early Sunday morning.

Firefighters say a possible house explosion and fire started at a house at #18 Tuxedo Ave. North, between Main Street East and Dunsmure Road, just before 5 a.m.

First responders reported seeing a fully involved, partially collapsed home at the address.

They said the volume of the fire and its exposure to the neighbouring homes raised the fire to a multiple alarm operation.

Firefighters initiated aerial operations, and using large volume hose lines to extinguish the fire.

They were also able to safely evacuate the residents of the neighbouring homes, but were unable to search the burning home because of significant structural damage.

Hamilton police determined that the residents of the burning building were not home at the time of the fire and were safe.

The fire department said the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office was notified based on the suspected nature of the fire.

David Cunliffe, the Hamilton Fire Department’s Fire Chief, said in a statement to CHCH News that the involved home sustained significant fire damage, and the home is expected to be a complete loss.

He said the homes on either side of the building appears to be minor.

Cunliffe said the damage estimates of the fire are expected to be over $500,000.

No one was reported injured.
