Niagara Regional Police say no one was injured in what “may be an encampment fire” under a bridge in St. Catharines Monday afternoon.

Officers say the fire broke out around 2:15 p.m. in the area of Glenridge and Westchester avenues under Highway 406.

St. Catharines Fire Chief Dave Upper says the fire could have been started following explosions involving an object similar to an aerosol can or a one-pound propane cylinder.

The fire has been extinguished.

Police initially asked people to avoid the area around 2:40 p.m., but the roads have since reopened.

Investigators say the Ministry of Transportation attended the scene to inspect the bridge.
