Niagara police arrest North York man following human trafficking investigation in Port Colborne

Niagara police have arrested one man from North York following a human trafficking investigation in Port Colborne.

Officers say that a routine traffic stop sparked the investigation, which primarily focused on the alleged trafficking of a woman throughout Ontario and Quebec.

She is believed to have been trafficked in Montreal, Markham, Port Hope, Sudbury, Manitoulin Island, the Greater Toronto area and Port Colborne.

As a result of the investigation, police have arrested 31-year-old Jamal Cooper-Batiste of North York.

He has been charged with the following:

  • Trafficking in persons
  • Receiving a financial or other material benefit
  • Failure to comply with probation

Detectives say they have reason to believe there may be more witnesses and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
