It’s been 50 years since the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank on Lake Superior.
The sinking, which killed all 29 crew members, has been immortalized by Gordon Lightfoot’s song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” which was released just a year after the tragedy.
Although the exact cause of the sinking isn’t known, storm conditions on Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975 were less than ideal for the ship.
High waves and the storm that took over the lake are believed to have played a part in the tragedy.
When the wreckage was located, it had been broken into two main sections.
