MMA gets bankruptcy protection

A Quebec superior court judge has granted creditor protection to the Canadian branch of the railway at the centre of the Lac-Megantic disaster.

The Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railroad Company will be protected while it attempts to avoid bankruptcy.

It faces several lawsuits and enormous cleanup costs after the July derailment that caused a massive explosion that killed 47 people. The railway’s american branch has asked for the same protection in the U.S.

The cost of cleaning up the wreckage in Lac-Megantic has already reached $8 million. MMA is trying to get its insurer to cover the cost.
