(Updated) A fight at a Cambridge home has led to a police shooting.

A female officer with Waterloo Regional Police was stabbed, and a man was shot by police. The province’s Special Investigations Unit is gathering evidence outside a townhouse on Morning Calm Dr.

John Ansell, the lead investigating officer with the SIU tells CHCH News the case revolves around a relationship and a domestic assault. It began on wednesday, around 5:00 in the afternoon a 30-year-old woman who lived at the home reported to police that her ex-partner, a 30-year-old man, assaulted her.

Later in the evening things went from bad to worse. A frantic police call sent officers and a struggle ensued with a large kitchen knife on the front lawn.

“At about midnight last night the male, who doesn’t live at this residence, broke in and assaulted the female. Police responded immediately. When police arrived they encountered the male in front of the home and during that encounter the police officer was stabbed. The officer responded with a firearm and the male was shot.”

At least five forensic investigators from the the SIU have been assigned to the case. They’re taking photos and gathering evidence. On the sidewalk, on the driveway, and the grass, there’s still blood here, a bloody sweater that’s been left behind. The knife is still on the scene.

The scene is quite gruesome, showing how intense this situation was around midnight.

A woman who lives just behind the residence told CHCH News: “It’s very, very scary. There’s kids running around here all the time. I’m in complete shock right now. I hope everything is OK. I hope everything turns out good for her. But it’s a wake-up call, that’s for sure.”

All three people who were hurt were taken to hospital. The female officer is in stable condition, the man and the woman were airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital. The woman is in serious condition but is expected to make a full recovery; the man is fighting for his life. Both were in surgery this morning.

CHCH’s Nicole Martin remains on the scene; watch for updates on Morning Live and News Now.
