Man charged with impaired driving after colliding with GO bus in St. Catharines

A 56-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving after colliding with a GO bus in St. Catharines.

Niagara police say on March 22 at approximately 4 p.m., officers were called to the area of North Service Road and YMCA Drive after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision.

Investigators say a northbound Honda CRV hit a GO bus travelling southbound head on. There were 18 passengers on the bus.

The driver of the GO bus and five passengers, including an infant, were transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Michael Winger, 56, of Omemee was taken to a Niagara police facility to provide a breath sample. He was found to be three times over the legal limit of blood alcohol concentration.

Winger was charged with the following offences:

  • Impaired Operation of a Conveyance C.C
  • Impaired Operation of a Conveyance Exceed BAC C.C.
  • Fail to Surrender Insurance Card C.A.I.A.
  • Drive Vehicle or Boat with Cannabis Readily Available C.C.A.

Winger’s driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and the Honda CRV he was driving has been impounded for seven days.
