Health officials confirm 2 cases of measles in Halton
Halton’s public health authority says it has confirmed two measles cases in the region and is warning the public that there may have been communal exposure.
There are three instances that the region is drawing attention to:
- Maple Grove Public School and YMCA Before and After Care, 288 Maple Grove Drive, Oakville, April 11.
- Oakville Pediatric Urgent Care including the waiting room and the Compounding Centre Pharmacy, 2540 Postmaster Drive, Oakville, April 17 from 12:08 to 3:09 p.m.
- Georgetown Medical Associates and Halton Hills Family Health Team, 199 Princess Anne Drive, Georgetown, April 24, from 9:19 a.m. to 12:02 p.m.
Halton says its public health authority is reaching out to anyone who may have been exposed to the virus at the locations listed above.
Additionally, it says anyone who may have visited one of these locations during the noted times should check their immunization records and make sure they’re up-to-date on their measles vaccinations.
Measles has an incubation period of seven to 21 days after initial contact. Symptoms include:
- cough;
- fever;
- runny nose;
- red eyes;
- sleepiness;
- irritability;
- small, white spots on the inside of the mouth (known as Koplik Spots), and;
- a red blotchy rash that first starts on the face and spreads across the body (lasting four to seven days).
Anyone who thinks they may have measles is urged to call ahead before visiting a doctor’s office, walk-in clinic, or emergency department.
“I encourage everyone to ensure their immunizations, including for measles, are up to date, particularly children who may have missed their routine shots during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Deepika Lobo, Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region.
