Hamilton police are seeking witnesses after a serious collision involving a stolen SUV on Mohawk Road Saturday night left a teen in critical condition.

Officers were called to the area of Mohawk and Ashton roads shortly after 10:30 p.m. for a collision involving a stolen Volkswagen SUV occupied by a 15-year-old girl with a 16-year-old female passenger.

Authorities say one of the occupants was leaning out of the passenger side of the vehicle when they hit a light pole on Mohawk Road West, suffering critical injuries.

The SUV then turned southbound onto Ashton Road, where the injured youth was removed from the vehicle. As the driver tried to flee, the SUV struck another vehicle that stopped to help.

The stolen vehicle was abandoned on Darlington Street but was found later that evening. The remaining occupant has since come forward and been interviewed.

Investigators say charges are expected. The injured youth remains in hospital in serious condition.
