Hamilton police charge two men with 2nd-degree murder of Zachary Shuman

Hamilton police have charged two men with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a 25-year-old single father in Dundas nearly two weeks ago.
Zachary Shuman, who leaves behind his three-year-old daughter, was shot and killed in a parking lot near 77 Governors Rd. on July 27.
In an update Tuesday, investigators say they arrested 30-year-old Andrew Kowalik of Dundas on Sunday and 27-year-old Mussie Gebremariam of Kitchener on Monday.
Both men appeared in court Monday and remain in custody. Police say they are not looking for any additional suspects.

“Both Kowalik and Gebremariam were known to Zachary,” Det. Sgt. Sara Beck said during a press conference Tuesday.
“They’ve known each other for a number of years. They’re all associated. They know each other from Dundas…The nature of the relationship with Gebremariam is that he is known in Hamilton as a drug trafficker.”
Detectives say it all unfolded in a Metro parking lot in Dundas, where Shuman and the two men had planned to meet. However, a “disturbance” then broke out.
Police say Shuman then followed the men — who were driving in a blue Ford Edge — to a parking lot near an apartment building located at 77 Governors Rd.

Around 5 p.m., officers were called to the scene and found Shuman unresponsive. He was pronounced dead soon after.
Witnesses saw Kowalik and Gebremariam leaving the scene in the blue Ford Edge, which police recovered in Kitchener. Police have not yet recovered a weapon.
A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help support Shuman’s family, who have stepped up to raise his daughter. Nearly $42,000 USD has been raised so far.
Hamilton police say 27 shootings have happened so far this year, with five of those being fatal.
