Police have charged a 28-year-old Hamilton man following an unprovoked, hate-motivated assault in the downtown core.
On Feb. 21, officers responded to a report of an assault in the area of Augusta Street.
Authorities determined that a woman was standing on a public street when she was approached by an intoxicated man who began verbally harassing her using derogatory language.
The woman tried to de-escalate the situation but was struck in the face, knocking off and breaking her glasses. The incident then escalated further, resulting in the woman being pulled to the ground and kicked.
As a result, a 28-year-old man allegedly involved in the violent attack was charged with assault and resisting a peace officer.
At this time, detectives have not released further details regarding the attacker or victim.
Hamilton’s Hate Crime Unit has taken over the investigation.
