Hamilton cop Mellor facing more misconduct charges

A Hamilton Police sergeant is facing more charges.

Derek Mellor appeared before a Police Services Act disciplinary hearing earlier today.

The two new discreditable conduct charges against Mellor are for an alleged sexual relationship with a witness in a domestic violence case he was investigating. These charges date from the year 2000, before he was assigned to lead the first Hamilton Police human trafficking unit, a job he held until he was suspended in December 2012 amid allegations from women connected to his work.

Last February Mellor pleaded guilty to nine Police Services Act charges, admitting to inappropriate sexual relationships with women connected to human trafficking cases. Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit became involved this week because Hamilton Police didn’t notify them about those charges at the time – even though they are mandated to do so.

Hamilton Police won’t comment on these new charges because of the ongoing investigation but Mellor’s lawyer Leo Kinahan told CHCH News about how his client is doing. “As well as anybody would be under the circumstances. It’s devastating for him, difficult on him, it’s difficult on his family. He’s holding up but it’s a trying time for him.”

Mellor remains suspended with pay. He did not enter a plea.

The hearing for today’s charges will resume by conference call on November 4th. The sentencing hearing on the charges he’s already pleaded guilty to resumes September 29th.
