Hamilton Argyll receives honourary medal from The Netherlands

The last surviving member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders has received an honourary war medal from The Netherlands.
Lance Corporal (LCpl.) Tony Mastromatteo, age 104, was awarded yesterday with the “Medal of Remembrance”, which honours Canadian soldiers who participated in the liberation of the country during World War II.
The president of the Dutch Canadian Veterans Association — on behalf of the Vice Consul of the Netherlands — presented the ‘Thank You, Canada’ medal to Mastromatteo at a ceremony in Toronto.
LCpl. Mastromatteo served in The Netherlands from mid-September to late October of 1944. He also fought in France and Belgium.
More than 3,300 Argylls served in the Second World War.
On LCpl. Mastromatteo’s 104th birthday last month he was presented with a ceremonial coin to honour what his regiment described as their “most experienced” Argyll.
