Following Ontario’s Fall Economic Statement, Halton Healthcare has announced new funding  to expand hospital capacity across the region.

In a statement released today, the healthcare service says it’s adding up to 123 acute care beds within two years at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and Milton District Hospital (MDH). The statement did not include how much money is reserved for this project.

Gordon Krantz, Mayor of Milton  says he welcomes the province’s investment in the healthcare needs of Milton residents.

“Earlier this month, I co-sponsored a resolution at Regional Council in support of this project, which received unanimous support,” Krantz said. “This investment will support not just Milton, but the entire region by increasing healthcare capacity.”

Halton Healthcare says the project includes building out the shelled space at OTMH, strengthening hospital capacity across the region. 3

Shelled space is unfinished space that was intentionally part of the hospital’s build to allow us to grow with our communities and patient needs.

Rob Burton, Mayor of Oakville says he is pleased to have a provincial government that does its part to keep up with the growth we all are working to accommodate.

“I especially appreciate the Government of Ontario’s leadership and commitment to strengthening health care in Oakville.” Burton said.

Halton Healthcare’s statement says funding will also support new capacity at MDH and create jobs and employment opportunities both throughout the construction phase and for clinical and support staff once the new space is operational.

In Halton Region, the number of residents aged 75 and older is expected to double in the next two decades, increasing the demand for hospital-based care.
