The 30th annual Great Waterfront Trail Adventure kicks off today in Hamilton, where participants will cycle around 640 kilometres over the next eight days to visit Lake Ontario, Lake Huron and Lake Erie.

Riders will start at Mohawk College on Friday morning.

This year’s course is brand new, and organizers say it’s a challenging one. Today’s distance is the shortest, at only 35 kilometres.

The longest daily ride is expected to take place on the third day, when cyclists will travel about 154 kilometres from Guelph to Goderich. The rest of the trek is expected to be much easier after that.

Participants will camp out at most of the stops while also getting to enjoy off-bike activities along the way.

The ride started as a way to celebrate the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, but has since evolved into an awareness event that identifies any significant improvements needed on the trails.

Drivers can expect to see an increase in cyclists on the roads in Hamilton today, particularly around downtown and along York Boulevard.
