Former U.S. House Speaker and Democratic representative Nancy Pelosi announced she will not be running for re-election to congress come next year.

She had been at the forefront of the Democratic party’s fight against the Trump administration’s policies.

Pelosi made the announcement through a love letter to San Francisco, a city she was first elected to represent back in 1987.

The 85-year-old Speaker Emeritus led her party in the house under the leadership two Democratic presidents and the sitting president, Donald Trump.

The announcement Thursday by the California Democrat brings to a close a storied career that saw her become the first woman to hold that job and arguably the most powerful woman in American politics.
