On a day when we remember veterans who fought to make our world a better place, a group of young people was providing food to the homeless. It was all in the hope of capturing the spirt of service.

Homeless people looking for their next meal downtown Hamilton didn’t need to go far.

These McMaster University students belong to an aid organization called Humanity First. They say it’s important to recognize poverty as a problem.

“People like to delve their efforts into international aid but often forget about people in their own backyard.” said Humanity First volunteer Khizar Karim.

About 40 volunteers visited as many streets in the downtown core as possible to distribute as many as 500 pieces of donated pizza with beverages.

Humanity First says Remembrance Day couldn’t be a more fitting day to give to the community.

“Take part in that spirit of volunteerism and service not just remember what the veterans have done for us but also to embody that.” said Humanity First regional coordinator Anser Daud.

The volunteers also visited a couple shelters to give out pizza. The group says they gain more in smiles than they give.
