A Stoney Creek man is in custody following a bizarre incident at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church on Park St N in central Hamilton over the weekend.

Police say an intoxicated man caused extensive property damage to the inside of the church Saturday afternoon. The man is accused of starting a fire inside and damaging several items.

Police also say the man removed several religious items out of a locked-up cabinet, including a beaded rosary. When officers arrived, they found him lying on the grass outside the church wearing the rosary.

Todd MacKinnon, 26, is facing several charges including arson.
