Doug Ford vows gas tax cuts, remove Highway 407 tolls if elected

Incumbent Premier Doug Ford has announced plans to make a tax cut on gas and diesel permanent, and to remove tolls from Highway 407.

Ontario PC Leader Doug Ford appeared in Pickering Wednesday announcing plans to “protect Ontario Drivers’ wallets” if re-elected.

He said if re-elected he will make the 5.7 per cent tax cut on gas and 5.3 tax cut on diesel permanent.

He further promised to introduce legislation to ban the use of congestion pricing on all provincial and municipal roadways, building on previous legislation that banned new tolls on provincial highways.

Ford said at the press conference that his party aimed to improve highway traffic through building more roads.

“We have a capacity issue here, that’s the problem,” says Ford. “For ten and ten years we know all 400-series highways are going to be maxed out – with some sooner than others. That’s why we’re building the 413, the Bradford bypass, we’re gonna build this tunnel – we’re waiting for the visibility study – we need more capacity.”

Doug Ford posted on X just after 10:30 a.m. a video advertising his vow to cut the gas tax permanently.

Ford called the snap election for Feb. 27, on the grounds of needing a fresh mandate to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump.
