The CHCH Christmas Toy Drive officially kicked off today, and once again we have partnered with the East Hamilton Optimist Club.

The toy drive collects thousands of toys for children who are in need.

Last year the CHCH Christmas Toy Drive helped hundreds of families and gave away thousands of toys from generous donations from our viewers, and this year the need is growing.

The Christmas spirit was in full force today at East Gate Square in Hamilton with a children’s parade and Santa Claus making an appearance. It was also the kick off of CHCH’s Christmas Toy Drive. The East Hamilton Optimist Club has been doing a toy drive for over 50 years.

“I think by just looking at the way the economy is going, it’s really important that they donate an unwrapped toy for families that can’t afford to buy,” said Charles Manning from the East Hamilton Optimist Club.

Donations for the toy drive are for children 12 and under. CHCH News has been taking part for over 20 years.

“The most gratifying part for us at the station, which is filled with people who live and work in this community, is just to see how generous our viewers are – that they donate and donate and donate. And it’s great to see that come into the station and come into Eastgate Square here in the box,” said Greg O’Brien, CHCH news director.

Santa says Christmas is all about giving if you can.

“There’s a lot of different pieces of the Christmas season that bring true magic, but the biggest piece of that is our community working together. And when our community is able to give the extra that they have, it helps those who maybe don’t have that extra during the Christmas season,” said Kris Kringle, visiting from the North Pole.

To donate to the CHCH Christmas Toy Drive, you can drop off new unwrapped toys at Eastgate Square in Hamilton.

To make a monetary donation, you can e-transfer to toydrive@chch.com or visit a First Ontario Credit Union branch to donate in person. All of your donations help children right here in our community.

Our toy drive is also collecting for Brant County and the Niagara area.
