Canadian private sector union launches campaign to support journalism, combat misinformation

Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, has launched a new ‘Fact Checked’ campaign to combat misinformation and support Canadian journalism.
Under Unifor’s ‘Media Action Plan’, the campaign is asking Canadians to double-check what they’re reading and viewing online, emphasizing that news from a trusted news source is information that has been fact checked, reviewed and verified.
“Extremism and fascism are on the rise, and foreign governments and bad actors are disrupting our elections and interfering in our domestic affairs, fueling misinformation, disinformation and propaganda,” a statement from Unifor read.
The Fact Checked campaign launched on Sept. 17 and will have social media, TV and newspaper spots to bring attention to the “fight against misinformation.”
“News media in Canada is under threat. Attacks on journalistic integrity are fuel distrust in a time of radical disinformation,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.
Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy.
